Best Cold Medication With High Blood Pressure
About 1 out of every 2 people[1] have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Many people don't even realize that they have high blood pressure until they get blood pressure reading. The reason most people don't realize they have it is because there are usually no clear or obvious symptoms. Regardless, leaving it untreated can lead to long-term issues such as greater chance of stroke or heart attack. The Centers for Disease Control[2] lists both stroke and heart disease as the two leading causes of deaths.
The best way to avoid these serious issues to prevent your blood pressure from increasing. This can normally be done with diet, exercise, and other healthy life choices. Sometimes, even all that is not enough and you have to rely on medications. Some studies[3] have suggested that CBD may have properties that help manage high blood pressure or other issues related to high blood pressure. Read on to answer the question: Does cbd oil lower blood pressure or not?
Does CBD lower blood pressure
Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a cannabinoid that is derived from the cannabis plant. Cannabis plants that contain THC, the psychoactive compound, are referred to as marjuana, whereas plants with less than 0.3% of THC is considered hemp.
Due to the legal history of both cannabis and hemp, studies for using CBD for treating medical conditions have been fairly limited, especially in humans. CBD has shown to have many potential therapeutics effects including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, antipsychotic, and many more.
While there have been data[4] that show that CBD can help relax arteries and veins, it is unclear whether CBD actually lowers blood pressure in humans.
There have been some animal studies[5] that suggest that using CBD may lower blood pressure and heart rate in stressful situations, and possibly increase blood flow in the brain after a stroke. The mechanism by which CBD relaxes blood vessels is believed to stem from the endocannabinoid system (ECS). While the exact mechanism is unclear, it is believed that CBD interacts indirectly with CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors can be found in the endothelial lining of blood vessels, possibly being the trigger to relax your arteries and veins.
Ultimately, more research is needed to confirm whether CBD has effective health benefits for people with high blood pressure. However, if you're seeking an alternative form of hypertension treatment or want to avoid blood pressure medications, CBD may help.

What Is High Blood Pressure (aka Hypertension)?
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure is a silent disease that means the force of blood flow in the blood vessels of your body is too high. It's sometimes called the "silent killer"[1] because many people do not have symptoms of high blood pressure but it can also lead to major heart disease or cause health issues such as heart attacks, stroke, and even kidney problems.
A normal blood pressure[6] is usually less than 120 over 80 (< 120/80). The first number is the systolic blood pressure, which is how much pressure the blood vessels in your body measures when your heart is beating. This systolic number is almost always higher. The second number is your diastolic blood pressure, which is the blood pressure in the blood vessels between heartbeats, or at rest.
Hypertension is defined as an elevated blood pressure in your body. This means if either number is higher than a certain range, you may have hypertension. For your systolic blood pressure, if the number is 130 or greater, you likely have a high blood pressure. For the diastolic pressure, if you have a number higher than 80, you may have high blood pressure. The higher the numbers, the more serious your condition. Blood pressure measurements are as follows:
- Normal: systolic <120 mmHg and diastolic <80 mmHg
- Elevated: systolic from 120-129 mmHg and diastolic < 80 mmHg
- Stage 1: systolic from 130-139 mmHg or diastolic from 80-89 mmHg
- Stage 2: systolic ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic ≥ 90 mmHg
- Hypertensive Crisis: systolic ≥ 180 mmHg or diastolic ≥ 120 mmHg
Types of high blood pressure
There are two common types of high blood pressure, primary (or essential) and secondary. Primary hypertension accounts for about 90 to 95% of cases whereas secondary accounts for the remaining amount.
Primary hypertension[7] is defined as high blood pressure without a known direct cause, typically due to a variety of factors such as obesity, age, diabetes, stress, non-active lifestyle, and many more.
Secondary hypertension[8] is caused by another disease or medication. Possible conditions that cause secondary hypertension include kidney problems, hormonal diseases, Cushing's syndrome, thyroid issues, sleep apnea. Medication causes include birth control medications, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroids, and illicit drugs (cocaine, amphetamines, etc).
CBD Effects on Blood Pressure
The effects of CBD on blood pressure has not been fully studied. There are some animal studies and a few small studies in humans available that describe the effects of CBD on the vascular system, however the majority of studies are with other cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinol.
The mechanism by which CBD relaxes could lower blood pressure is by opening blood vessels. This mechanism may possibly be mediated by the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The idea is that CBD interacts with CB1 and CB2 receptors indirectly, which triggers the relaxation of blood vessels.
In one animal study[3], cannabidiol or CBD acted as a weak or partial agonist on PPARγ receptors. This interaction caused vasorelaxation or widening of the aorta (a heart artery) which could lead to lower possible lower blood blood pressure.
The actual effects of CBD oil on hypertension is not known. In a review of studies[9], it was suggested that CBD does not impact blood pressure or heart rate. However, one small study showed that a single dose of 600 mg CBD lessened blood flow and lowered systolic blood pressure in healthy people but it also increased heart rate.
In other research[3], data showed that taking CBD may have beneficial effects on other heart-related problems. For example, one health issue that CBD has shown some effects in is improving heart function. In animal studies, a single dose of cannabidiol resulted in better heart function in rats with diabetes. Other studies showed smaller clots and anti-inflammatory effects in animals that had heart attacks or strokes.
Research on taking CBD oil suggests there may be some potential value for people with hypertension with at least one other heart related problem, but in managing hypertension patients to lower blood pressure only, more studies are needed.
Does CBD oil help with blood pressure?
Based on current research, there is not enough data to say that using CBD oil for high blood pressure is effective. The data is conflicting, especially in human subjects. Some studies report a change in blood pressure readings while other reports no effect on blood pressure after a single dose of CBD.
If you plan to take CBD oil to treat your high blood pressure, you should talk with your doctor first. If your condition is serious enough, you may need to take medications. However, certain medications may carry unwanted side effects. Currently, the American Heart Association[10] recommends diet and exercise as the natural approach for managing hypertension and heart disease.
How does marijuana affect blood pressure?
Marijuana contains both CBD and higher concentrations of THC. In studies, this psychoactive ingredient has shown similar cannabinoid properties to CBD in causing vasorelaxation. However, the evidence is not clear on whether THC helps lower blood pressure.
One study[11] reported that THC increased heart rate but did not significantly change blood pressure in healthy patients. In fact, a long term study[12] reported that hypertension was more common in chronic majrijuana users than those who had never used marijuana before.
CBD Dosage For High Blood Pressure
Since there is a limited number of studies for using CBD oil for hypertension and it has not been approved for this disease, the dose of CBD to treat hypertension is not known.
If you want to use CBD oil for high blood pressure (hypertension), you should talk with your doctor first. They may be able to recommend a dose of CBD to help manage your condition.
Typically, as with most medications, you should start at a single dose that is low and work your way up to a dose that works best for you and manage your hypertension. Taking too much CBD can lead to unwanted side effects[9].
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best CBD treatment for hypertension?
The CBD product is the one that fits your needs. Since there is so much available on the market, you may want to see which form of administration you prefer, whether it's oils, gummies, or even softgel capsules. Also, your body may experience different effects based on the dose and brand you choose. Talk with your doctor before trying CBD for treating your hypertension and they may help you in choosing the right choice for you.
What are some side effects of CBD?
Since products may vary in dosages and ingredients, side effects may vary. However, the FDA has approved one CBD derivative, Epidiolex[13] for certain types of epilepsies. Based on those clinical trials, CBD may contain side effects such as liver injury, sleepiness when taken with alcohol or other drugs, bigger appetite, and possibly diarrhea.
